- He was mostly self-taught, with only two years of formal education, and learned through his family’s business and books.
- He designed a musical instrument called “glass armonica,” and Mozart, Beethoven and Strauss composed music for it.
- He loved swimming, and carried the love from early childhood through adulthood. One of his first inventions was a pair of wooden hand paddles, and later in life he was inducted as a member of the International Swimming Hall of Fame.
