The Power of “Bingo!”

How satisfying is it to yell BINGO! at your winning moment? If I’m to base my answer from G, I’d say it’s borderline euphoric! Sometimes the best games to play are the simplest. We have a few ways to play Bingo, and here are some of them.

Spell It Bingo

This one specifically helps G spell simple words. The Bingo tiles are the individual letters of the alphabet, and each card forms two three-letter words. The player who forms both words first gets to yell—as enthusiastically as the neighbors allow—BINGO!

How To Play:

  1. Shuffle the letter cards and place them face-down in the middle.
  2. Each player selects a Bingo card to use.
  3. The youngest player picks the top card from the letter cards and reads the letter out loud.
  4. If a player’s card includes the called out letter, he marks it with a token.
  5. The first player to put a token on all the letters of his Bingo card gets to yell “BINGO!”

Spell & Write It Bingo

This version allows us to practice our writing skills as well. Instead of bingo cards with pre-written words, we have small dry erase boards with squares drawn on them with permanent marker.

How To Play:

  1. Shuffle the letter cards and place them face-down in the middle.
  2. Each player selects three Bingo images to use. For our purpose, we have doodles of four-letter word objects.
  3. The youngest player picks the top card from the letter cards and reads the letter out loud.
  4. If a player’s card includes the called out letter, he writes the letter on the appropriate box.
  5. The first player to spell all of his Bingo images gets to yell “BINGO!”

Add It Bingo

In this variation, we exercise our adding muscles. Each player takes turns selecting a card from the pile, which he (and not the opponent) uses. The card gives an addition problem, with squares to assist in solving it. The player who marks all the numbers on his/ her card wins!

How To Play:

You will need to prepare the Bingo number cards, and the addition cards. You can download copies here.

  1. Each player selects a Bingo card.
  2. Shuffle the addition cards and place them in a pile between the players.
  3. The first player draws an addition card, and solves the problem.
  4. The player who drew the card marks his/ her Bingo card appropriately.
  5. The next player selects a new card from the pile and performs 3 and 4.
  6. If the pile is used up, reshuffle.
  7. When a player has marked all the boxes in his/ her card, the player yells Bingo and wins the round.
